Chinnavedampatti Lake Development Organization, Saravanampatti

Field works carried out for 235 consecutive weeks

In 2017, I successfully formed the very first people’s movement of Kousika Neerkarangal with a sole objective of reviving Chinnavedampatti Lake, one of the biggest reservoirs within the corporation limits of Coimbatore. Without a doubt, I consider this to be a milestone in my journey as this movement inspired and triggered multiple other people movements in the region.

This reservoir was constructed in 1987, making it the newest in the region with a full tank level of 261.414 meters. With a catchment area of 36 sq kms in the foothills of Western Ghats and being a massive reservoir with an area of 200 acres, this is undoubtedly an unutilized tank with a massive potential to cater the needs of rapid urbanization of the region.

Impact and Achievements

  • Pooled funds from the public and many industries and rejuvenated the lake feeder canal (Rajavaikal) from Kanuvai Check dam to the Lake for about 8 kilometres stretch after 20 years.
  • Pooled CSR funds and cleaned the bushes at the front side of the lake bund.
  • Established extensive green cover projects in an area of around 6 acres with about 3000 native varieties of saplings. This is greatly contributing towards the restoration of biodiversity of the lake.
  • Eradicated seemai karuvelam trees within the lake tank area by uprooting the trees entirely in the lake tank and the bunds of the lake.
  • Organized a grand function with the local and district administration and inaugurated bio-fence project, a first of its kind in Tamilnadu for a lake. Bio fencing of western and northern boundaries of the tank has been underway for about 2.5 kilometers.
  • Feeding birds with water pools into the tank area of the lake during summer and regularly feeding birds with grains and water in mud pots in the green cover plantation area, which directly augments increase in green cover thus creating a cascading effect.
  • Children’s park has been set up to attract next generation kids towards the lake and to make them aware of its importance. Also, to actively engage children in this noble cause, regular sessions are arranged where children learn different forms of art and express their own world and view towards nature.
  • Field activities are ongoing every week and with active participation from volunteers, stakeholders, students, and children.
  • Consistent media cover and representation to the government for the last five years for water resource to the lake from the catchment area and alterative source, through positive approache.
