About This Project
Aavarankulankulam Lake is a vital 85-acre waterbody located in northern Coimbatore, between Kovilpalayam and Annur, serving as a primary water source for several villages including Kariampalayam, Ellapalayam, Telungupalayam, Kattampatti, Masandipalayam, and Kempanaickenpalayam. Once a thriving lake, it had deteriorated into a grazing and dumping ground due to years of neglect.
Recognizing its importance in a drought-prone zone with erratic rainfall, Kousika Neerkarangal undertook the rejuvenation of the lake, restoring its capacity and preparing it to receive water through Phase I of the Athikkadavu–Avinashi Groundwater Recharge Project. With a projected inflow of 46.18 LPS from the Bhavani river, the lake can now hold up to 29 crore litres, significantly impacting the groundwater table within a 10 km radius. This effort not only revives a critical water source but also contributes to long-term water security and biodiversity enhancement in the region.
