About Kousika Neerkarangal

Kousika Neerkarangal has dedicated more than fifteen years to the watershed development and rejuvenation of Kousika River. This river holds significant archaeological, historical, and literary importance, yet it currently remains dry for a substantial part of the year. Our team strongly believes that the opportunity to revitalize and restore the Kousika River is a lifetime opportunity that nature has provided us.

The initial phases of this ambitious journey are already in progress. Comprehensive surveys have been conducted on streams, dams, and lakes throughout the entire Kousika river basin.

Kousika Neerkarangal has successfully established 15 autonomous people movements to safeguard water bodies in collaboration with local communities.

Projects are actively underway, facilitated by these grassroots movements, with contributions from both the public and private sectors through crowd funding and CSR initiatives. While our primary focus remains to be restoration of Kousika River, our efforts extend to numerous water bodies in Tirupur and Coimbatore. This includes water bodies of diverse scales, from a 2 acre pond to a 200 acre lake. Additionally, we are collaborating closely with the government to influence policies and enhance the effectiveness of existing laws for the benefit of the ecosystem and people.

We undoubtedly believe that our steadfast commitment towards this noble cause will lead to a triumphant success on this enduring journey.

Our Vision

Breathe new life into a river with a 2000-year history, safeguard its watershed, and foster sustainable living and cultural transformation within the community through decentralised grassroot level initiatives. The triumph of restoring a watershed is not merely an option; it is a necessity.

These endeavours cannot rely solely on expensive investments and machinery. Instead, we believe that each watershed has to be revitalised through distinctive, self-sustaining people’s movements that actively engage key stakeholders. Throughout our journey, we are steadfastly dedicated to navigating water conservation with love, benevolence, and uncompromised ethics.

This methodology guarantees an enduring and unwavering commitment to the preservation of the wetlands where our efforts are concentrated.

who we are

AGRAHARASAMAKULAM LAKE DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION

  • Being the primary feeder of Kousika from the north, Kousika’s revival is close to impossible without reviving Agraharasamakulam
  • Bunds on all sides have been strengthened multifold after 40 years
  • 7 inlet channels were completely revived
  • Massive bio diversity hotspot islands have been set up with the removed silt
  • Microforest has been created with 2000+ native trees
  • Capacity enhanced: 8 crore litres

Revival of River Kousika

  • Historically and archeologically significant areas surveyed with field experts and student volunteers,
through which extensive varieties of artefacts were discovered. Through carbon dating the Kousika
river civilization was proved to be at least 2000 years old.
  • Hydrological and Paleontological significance of the river was established through semi fossils
discovered in the river bed which has been accepted to be at least 10,000 years old.
  • Literary evidences commemorating the river’s wild flow was discovered through words of

Instrumental in attaching Kousika river to Athikadavu Avinashi groundwater recharge scheme and
